He was a member of the Republican Party. Hanson as Lieutenant Governor, in the 1978 primary election. They bypassed the party's endorsing convention."Johnson used the G.I. Bill to put himself through the University of Minnesota, where he earned a law degree. He also became a certified public accountant and spent most of his life in business for himself."
